The world’s greatest guitar band…. ever

Written by: 17 October 2017 No Comment

I was driving to the supermarket the other day, as ya do, and I was listening to a CD – one of 4 I’ve unearthed for car time listening. I have a lot of CDs, many many boxes filled… I hate them, it was always a rubbish format and one that I do not mourn for a fucking second! I do however have a shit ton of the damn things… and on so many is music that is very important to me… music that define me and complimented my life at various times… some represent how I made my living for a while too, so there is that memory train too (I really like trains).

So anyway I had dug pout The Butthole Surfers Rembrandt Pussyhorse album. An album that my mate Phil owned and we hammered over and over and over again while living in dingy mold ridden flats in the Tron (Hamilton).

As an aside we didn’t complain about mold ridden flats back then… not like today’s renters who campaign for houses to actually be livable. We didn’t know any better and our solution was to simply clean every now and then (yeah right, we are male) and to just accept winter as a time of damp…. jugs we less than five bucks so why would we complain.

Anyways back to the album, Phil bought his vinyl copy on one of our semi regular jaunts to Auckland’s Truetone Remuera, a place that was magic and parted us from money. Its a memories album… sunshine… beer, shitty living arrangements, non stop parties, crazy good times…

As I drove to the supermarket and home again I thought back on those times with fondness… and remembered two important things:

1: I’ve always considered the Butties the single greatest guitar band (I’m less staunch on this but can’t think of a band I’d put in front of them, so yeah)

2: Phil’s never seen them live and reminding him of such makes him angry – I saw them at the powerstation, it was all that and more

Now I got the CD when they re-issued the entire catalogue on CD in in 1999, I’ve almost all their albums, EPs etc on wax (excluding Pussyhorse, cause you know Phil had it… shared living memories. And finally my point and reson for posting… the album was at the time and will continue to be (until I change the CD) my “sound of tauranga”… a little bit weird and unsettling.

So included today are a bunch of songs I’d use to justify my claim…

This was a fave when, um… indulging…

and one of my all time fave songs

Lastly for good measure this song that at the time I didn’t allow myself to like and forced me to take a long vacation from the band… cause it made the band real popular (for a moment) and I prefer my rock bands are enjoyed by people whom don’t rate U2, yeah deal with it!

For those with the time and inclination, head over to youtube… listen to the songs… read the comments… something I generally recomend
