the neighbour of the beast

Written by: 20 July 2016 No Comment

As a young man I spent a year or two living in a flat at 668 Grey Street in the torn, we called the place naturally the neighbour of the beast and got up to all kinds of beastly things-  not as a consequence of our locale but because we were a house of young men who liked to drink, party and generally do things.

One of the residents at the time recently posted a link to some old live recordings of bands our friends were in at the time and as I’m a bit lost for what mix to put up this week they will fill the void, so to speak.

Both recordings are horrid, the bands sound terrible… neither were. In fact Hand Of Glory wrote one song I still consider way up there in my lists of great songs… Stars In My Eyes was the song, that was mooted to be a Flying Nun release even…a  7″. It never happened… I’ve never managed to find out if this was due to the labels ineptitude or bands – both is the most likely scenario.

The recordings starts of parkway through Stars In My Eyes and doesn’t come close to capturing the song in any way.

The second band were Forebrain – Hamiltons answer to Sonic Youth, Bailter Space and other “noise” bands of the era… drone ridden soundscapes performed by three dudes staring at their feet. They were possibly the best band Hamilton has ever produced… again the recording is shitehouse

Both shows were recorded in late 1991, if I remember correctly I had something to do with both shows in my role as student radio station manager… I think they were part of a series of gigs as a station birthday or some such thing… anyways it was a fun time for me, a very drunken one too – good times!

Well done to anyone who manages to listen to both all the way through.
