Season 3 of New Zealand’s Next Top Model kicked off on friday. Being a follower of the previous 2 seasons I’m hoping that this one will be similarly entertaining, and may even keep the ‘finger appraised of my thoughts from time to time.. The first episode was the usual first episode cavalcade of screaming wannabe models, micro clips and voice-overs to establish the models’ identities. Amongst all this it was hard to establish any real favourites. I’m hopeful that Bianca (who brought her lucky lizard to the model interview) will stick around for a few more episodes at least.

Onto the tunes, and there’s been a crapload of tunes doing it for me. Enjoying the chance to dj a little bit more of late. Too many to categorise or rank, here’s just a few favourites.

Brackles and Shortstuff’s ‘Blunted Robots’ label is always worthy of a listen, and I really like Dj Dom’s recent EP for them. Deep but bouncy UK Funky.

Sticking in the UK, and LuckyMe have another big tune in the form of Jacques Greene’s ‘Another Girl’. The original is a big, rnb based record, but my favourite from the release is Mark Flash UR’s Detroit based reworking of ‘The Look’

One more Uk based, RnB influenced tune, this time coming from Deadboy who’s been mining the rnb and uk bass sound for sometime, this time coming with an uplifting bassline which will no doubt sound massive at the various festivals over the northern summer.

Moving into more traditional house and techno territory, and Move D is on his usual fine form, recently remixing leif in a very laid back deep style with some lovely jazzy touches.

His EP from a few months back is also essential deep listening, I can’t get enough of ‘Your Personal Healer’ – lush piano chords, muted vocals and snips of acid.

Also dusting off the piano keys is Reggie Dokes. I really like his new EP on Clones’ excellent ‘Royal Oak’ sub label. ‘Haiti’ brings spritely keys and a great remix from promising new producers ‘Morning Factory’ who are named after my favourite Ron Trent track, which is a cool thing to take a name from.

Time to Express is a must check label for me since Dozzy and Cio D’ors hypnotising ‘Menta’, and their compilation has yielded some new gems including new (to me) tracks from Dozzy and Van Hoesen.

Sascha Rydell comes through with some deep heaviness on the equally awesome Fachwerk label.

Perc is another consistently strong producer, his great new track on his label features (amazingly) a remix from Chris Carter of throbbing gristle. That’s not on youtube though, so check out the equally smashing Ancient Methods mix;

Finally, Andy Stott emerges again on Modern Love with some amazing music. I really like this release, each track has something unique to it, and most of it is slowed, skewed, and dark. Great stuff.

Kicking off in house territories, little white earbuds has an interesting interview and mix from Tin Man. He has an interesting production style, and this is an enjoyable wee mix. Check it out.

Moving into somewhat heavier realms, new producer Blawan has been making some waves. Recommended by Mick, I’m digging on this one.
FACT Mix 230 – Blawan (Mar ’11) by factmag

The labyrinth aside, the best gig I went to in Japan last year was Kode 9 and Martyn. I was looking forward more to Martyn’s set but was surprised by how much I enjoyed Kode 9′s mix of dubstep, grime, and loads of Uk funky, all mixed up in between blasts on the vuvuzela (it was during the world cup). He recently did the essential mix, your enjoyment of which probably will correlate with your enjoyment of uk funky. I quite like it.
Kode 9 Essential Mix

Finally, a couple of things from further leftfield. I like eclectic mixes, they’re a great way to discover new artists you may not normally check.

Don’t know much about Roll The Dice, but here’s an interesting eclectic mix I found – the tracklisting should give you some idea of whether it’ll be your cup of tea or not.
This Is How We Roll by Roll the Dice

Blackest Ever Black venture into the darkness with their mix “she died with her eyes open”. It’s dark and different, and as we move into autumn I look forward to more from them.

Kassem Mosse has a new release on Workshop, and as usual with work from him and workshop it is sounding impressive. Mosse has become one of my favourite producers over the past year or so and this is more solid work.

Another guy I’m always on the look for releases for is Tevo Howard, who has a nice stripped down but melodic style to his deep house. ‘The age of compassion’ came out on buzzin’ fly last month which is a big label and hopefully a sign of more recognition for his productions.

Sneaking in from last year is House of Jezebel (aka Legowelt) with his take on ‘love and happiness’. It’s a sample that’s been used so many times, yet this raw, old school sounding production just does it for me..

One more house thing is Lauer’s excellent release from Robert Johnson last month.. Both these tracks remind me of New Order for some reason, perhaps the melodies and old school sounding drums..

Over in the increasingly popular post dubsteppy/nu garagey world, things are ticking along nicely too..
Really enjoyed sepalcure’s first 12″ last year on hotflush. This new one’s sounding good too

Staying on hotflush, the new George Fitzgerald with remix from Scuba is nice

Hackman is a newish uk funky producer who’s stuff I always check of late.. Interesting how some of this more mellow end of the uk post garage/funky thing is starting to meld with more trad tech house.

Julio Bashmore also successfully pushes my deep housey/steppy buttons with his new release.

Lovely stuff from 2562 who apparently made his entire new album constructed from samples of old disco records!

Over in more techno territory, Mike Dehnert comes through with another reliably enjoyable record

Delsin come through with some lush detroit stuff

And finally, Mike Parker and Donato Dozzy come heavy and hypnotic with a new Prologue.. Can’t listen to this without imagine it booming out over the mountains in Japan, and I’m already a bit excited about that becoming a reality.

These last 6 months have been frustrating as fuck for me! Saving, traveling, being broke, and having my records and turntables all packed away have combined to make it an extremely disjointed year in terms of record purchases.

This would be easier to bear if it wasn’t so easy to monitor all the great and interesting music that is still coming out. Subsequently I am still stashing records into a wishlist in the vain hopes that I can go back at some point in the future and purchase some of these. Mp3s are not the same. Usually things will sit on the wishlist either till I buy them or to the point where I realise perhaps this record is not essential – and will then be kicked off.

Anyhow, here for whatever reason are 5 records that I am currently deeming worthy of attention:

Melchior Productions – “Choir” (Cadenza)
Ok, so I lied a little and actually bought a few records recently – this one was a must have. I am a big fan of Thomas Melchoir dating back to his excellent ‘The Meaning’ LP on Playhouse a few years back, and the equally amazing ‘Feel Sensual’ on Perlon’s superlongevity 3 comp. His best stuff rolls over you at first, slowly revealing hidden details and depths over a number of listens (preferably at volume). Choir on the face of it is a rolling tribal drum beat, interspersed occasionally by, well, a children’s choir. Repeat plays bring up the details of the drum patterns, the weird effects, housey chords, insect noises(?), and vocal snatches stashed away in the depths. It is also really nice and long, and I am currently submersing myself regularly. The A side “who can find me (I can’t)” is yet to grab me, time will tell if it is another slow burner or a rare dud.

Guillaume and the coutu dumonts – “I was on my way to hell” (Circus Company)
This one has just come out and pointed out to me by fellow BMPer and Detroit visitor Mick.. Guillaume is someone who’s stuff I have always checked for since his record a few years ago on mutek’s label drew me in with it’s african influences and bouncy b-sides. He has had a fantastic run of releases in the last year, with a great album, trippy weirdness emerging on a 12″ for Oslo, and the amazing “they only come out at night” and “Les Gans” coming through on musique risquee, surely two of the bigger tracks of the year. Les Gans in particular has been firing away at me all year, I just can’t get sick of it. His new record pushes synths up and out with a gospel sample (he used a lot of gospel style vocal work in Detroit – along with, excellently, the Commodore’s “Brick House”). Meanwhile the b-side sounds like he is working african rhythms along with some rather spooky horns. The artwork looks amazing too which is the case on most circus company records.

Omar S – “Day” (FXHE)
I listened through a whole bunch of Omar S records earlier this year including this one, then forgot all about it. It recently popped up on a mix, and nagged at me incessantly until I did some more detective listening and figured out where I’d heard it before. It is a real simple thing, just some skippy house beats, a funky bass and a looping, filtered vocal sample of the supremes. Somehow though, it is an annoyingly addictive track, very happy and summery (pity I will shortly be leaving the sunshine but never mind). I like this.

TRG and dub u – “Losing Marbles” (Hotflush)
There has been loads of good dubstep this year! One guy who I have recently started to note a lot of is TRG. He is a Romanian producer (heads up websta) who seems to be prolific yet fairly consistent with a stream of dark and slinky garage and techno influenceds dubstep weirdness. I really like ‘Losing Marbles’ – it almost sounds like Monolake!, with a double bouncing techno beat and weird aquatic squelches and clicks rattling the tune along. 2562, another of my favourite dubstep producers, adds a somewhat more broken remix on the other side. I had to grab this one too!

Radioslave – “Eyes Wide Open”
Radioslave does this kind of lengthy, pounding repetitive groove awfully well. For whatever reason I never seem to mention him in the same breath as my favourite producers but he has done a great many things I love over the past few years (the mighty Tantakatan from earlier this year being my last favourite). “Eyes Wide Open” is just some crashing beats, a funky, endlessly repeating bassline and some vocal snippets that repeatedly build and work themselves up into crescendos. It still reminds me a bit of Paperclip People’s “Throw” and this can only be a good thing! The flip “incognito” works a similar groove but with synthier builds and female vocals echoing in the mix.

So there is 5, I could enthuse more, but that can wait till next time. I can’t wait till my situation solidifies and I can start mixing regularly again!

There are some things on in Auckland this weekend.

Tomorrow night (friday 15) I venture into the rain to play at the supperclub on Beresford square. I like supper – despite having a dodgy rep (thanks mainly to the antics of late morning up all night mentalist partygoers) it is generally a relaxed place where you can pretty much play whatever music you like. On an early evening in summer there are few better places in Auckland to be. On a night like tomorrow promises to be I can think of a bunch of nicer places to be, frankly, but it still should be fun.

Friday nights at supper are dubstep oriented. While I don’t mind the wobbly-bass noise sound seemingly favoured in Auckland I tend to buy the deeper/weirder/techno influenced sound. So I have assembled records from some of my favourite dubstep producers of recent times (Pinch, Shackleton, TRG, Martyn, Appleblim, Ramadanman, 2562) alongside some older 2step records on loan from the Websta collection. I am really enjoying the current deeper sound being pushed by the above artists (perhaps best showcased recently on Appleblim’s Dubstep Allstars 6). So anyway for those of you in Ak, feel free to pop along tomorrow, I believe I am playing between 10 and 11.

Saturday night brings with it a couple of gigs, I am going to kick it off at the Jet Jaguar gig at Khuja lounge, I have a Jet Jaguar album from a good few years ago which I recall as being some nice (if a little inoffensive) laid back electronic noodling. Should be a relaxing start to the night. Carrying on, Zen (the ‘new’ fu bar) has Loefah – who I know mainly from his great run of releases a few years back on DMZ. These records opened my eyes to the emergence of this style of music which was hacking away the extraneous matter and melodies and instead exploring the possibilities of pure, heavy bass. I have seen Mala (of Digital Mystikz) play twice, and enjoyed both times a lot – hopefully loefah will be another great night.

In the search for some musical goodness to link to I have found a podcast from Appleblim recorded in april. Shouts to Friedmylittlebrain.com for pointing this one out.
