Thanks for this great post! I grew up listening to Stan Freberg records with my father. I was too young then to understand what a brilliant satirst he is, but I adored those 45s and LPs nonetheless. It’s almost shocking to re-listen to “Green Chri$tma$” and hear such a strong moral voice in a comedy record. I suppose Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are the closest thing we have to this in contemporary humor. Anyhow, cheers!

The Corvallis, Oregon band, Gumbo, released Stan Freberg’s 50-year old tune, ‘Money’, updated as a ‘Tribute to Wall Street’, and it is still completely relevant. Gumbo’s version is the first official recording since June Carter’s in 1959. Download it for free at wildroseartists.com Stan was always ahead of his time.

I wonder if the vinyl would actually play through, so worn it is and as a kid I wasn’t exactly well versed in how to play vinyl without destroying it (eventually)

Excellent – I’d never heard freberg before, but also grew up on the goons so will make sure to have a listen.

Surely the digital copy, sans crackel & pops isn’t quite the same?

I really must find all those “talky” records that I grew up on.

P.S. I also have the wombles and can probably recite it word for word. Super womble was my theme tune of choice.
