Laneways with the keys

Written by: 1 February 2017 No Comment

We kiwis like to add a s to things… like tuna, well actually we don’t add a s to tuna but we do to Laneway the annual imported festival that originated in Melbourne, Australia… I call it laneways and I went on Monday to the Auckland event, here’s my patchy as fuck review.

First up the star of the show was the new location – Albert park worked fantastically well, the main stage and “lane” of booze, food, porta loos were on Princess Street which iw as initially dubious about but the reality proved that wrong. It worked, the trees were a delight (shade) and up until 5pm it was easy to move from stage to stage and through the busy food/booze corridor… after 5 as the crowd expanded it got a lot more crowded but was still easily navigated.

The four stages worked well

– the Rotunda Stage was pushed back towards the street from the actual rotunda (for the old summer series hands) which opened up a large expanse of grass to sit on or as most did due to the hot as fuck day sit around under the trees.

– The Fountain Stage was also pushed towards the street, well away from the actual fountain – thankfully cause it was baking under the sun all day. Again tress and shade were plentiful. Its claim to fame was I didn’t enjoy any of the bands I saw there, they was boring.

– The Main stage was way down Princess Street, surrounded by large trees (Shade) and while big wasn’t intimidating as main stages can be, if anything it felt like most festivals B or C stages – which made for a really nice intimate atmosphere while still handling the larger crowds the bigger names attracted.

– The Silo stage was down a side street, it was fucking mint (well shaded). My fave place to be so I saw a lot of acts I’d normally not have bothered with.

The access to booze was generally alright, queues got lengthy but moved fast… well up until I hit the can’t be fucked stage. The Friends and Family area was a bit pants (Uni Quad) so I spent virtually no time there – got a beer once, waited for a friend to use the flash portaloo once. Bonus, minimal contact with industry types.

The music was the biggest let down… I managed 10 acts –

The Chills – sounded fat and lifeless, shame cause I was looking forward to hearing the new songs played live and those oldies.

White Lung – I thought they sounded like a whammy bar punk band… then found they came from canada… oh well energetic and by the numbers cali styled punk, beer drinking music

Bob Moses – was very pleasant, sat and enjoyed some quiet restful tie listening, wouldn’t turn off if their music came on randomly nor would I seek it out.

Whitney – tbh I can’t really remember these guys… remember Emily ranting at me about them as they played

Car Seat Headrest – dull indie rock, once upon a time I’d have known their music all too well as they’d have been a regular play in the stockroom… thankfully I can choose not to bother with this sort of thing anymore

Refused – swedish punk rockers with a bit of metal thrown in, I distributed some of their albums back in the day, always thought they were a bit crap… energetic live show, decent songs (if thats ya thing)… didn’t mind them at all

Cut Off Your Hands – never liked them, never minded their songs – prob the best band I saw for the day… bright poppy indie rock played fast and loud. Fun and kept ya attention.

Clams Cassino – hiperty hoperty was killing time, wasn’t my thing prob real good.

K2K – was really looking forward to seeing this one act… played a DJ set which I was slightly disappointed at… was fantastic though… breath of fresh air to hear some electronic music that wasn’t indie’d. Started with only me and security… ended with a solid crowd dancing and head bopping.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – fuck this shit, not my thing…

Left early as I like to do, the uber zone was a fucking write off, no cabs… app being a dick… went to wends had a burger… washed face and hands (bliss) and caught the bus home

Other than being underwhelmed musically I had a top day… def keen to go again after telling myself this would be the last laneway for me…

Want more of a english essay of a review fuck off…  english isn’t my language ya cocks
