It isn’t house but it is a thing.

There are some things on in Auckland this weekend.

Tomorrow night (friday 15) I venture into the rain to play at the supperclub on Beresford square. I like supper - despite having a dodgy rep (thanks mainly to the antics of late morning up all night mentalist partygoers) it is generally a relaxed place where you can pretty much play whatever music you like. On an early evening in summer there are few better places in Auckland to be. On a night like tomorrow promises to be I can think of a bunch of nicer places to be, frankly, but it still should be fun.

Friday nights at supper are dubstep oriented. While I don’t mind the wobbly-bass noise sound seemingly favoured in Auckland I tend to buy the deeper/weirder/techno influenced sound. So I have assembled records from some of my favourite dubstep producers of recent times (Pinch, Shackleton, TRG, Martyn, Appleblim, Ramadanman, 2562) alongside some older 2step records on loan from the Websta collection. I am really enjoying the current deeper sound being pushed by the above artists (perhaps best showcased recently on Appleblim’s Dubstep Allstars 6). So anyway for those of you in Ak, feel free to pop along tomorrow, I believe I am playing between 10 and 11.

Saturday night brings with it a couple of gigs, I am going to kick it off at the Jet Jaguar gig at Khuja lounge, I have a Jet Jaguar album from a good few years ago which I recall as being some nice (if a little inoffensive) laid back electronic noodling. Should be a relaxing start to the night. Carrying on, Zen (the ‘new’ fu bar) has Loefah - who I know mainly from his great run of releases a few years back on DMZ. These records opened my eyes to the emergence of this style of music which was hacking away the extraneous matter and melodies and instead exploring the possibilities of pure, heavy bass. I have seen Mala (of Digital Mystikz) play twice, and enjoyed both times a lot - hopefully loefah will be another great night.

In the search for some musical goodness to link to I have found a podcast from Appleblim recorded in april. Shouts to Friedmylittlebrain.com for pointing this one out.

  4. Yeah it went alright - I made Jason bring along my whole crate of dubstep and only used 1 record from it :/ 2 step went pretty well and I managed to play some Maurizio, so all and all pretty good times.

Wonder how the first half of that mix went down with the rinse fm (primarily grime/dubstep) listeners.
