In it for the kicks

Written by: 5 February 2016 No Comment

My pick for my mix of the week is the Kenny Dope one referenced (and linked to) in my song of the week post, its below this one of you can navigate your way there. So there is no real need to put up a link to another mix is there?

So to keep my post rate (and goal) up I’m going to talk about one of the first things I’d grab on a Monday morning at work, where I do most of my music listening. The Radio Hauraki show In It For The Kicks hosted by Nick Collings and Greg Churchill and bravely scheduled and supported by the then Content Director David Riddler.

I really enjoyed the show, Nick and Greg were fantastic co hosts, they had some great guests and the show flowed like they’d been doing it for eons, not just fifty shows.

The show was cancelled as it hit its fiftieth episode. I don’t know why it was cancelled but I figure a lot has to do with David leaving the station and subsequent tweeking of all aspects of the station to make it more “competitive” with The Rock is my guess and polite way of putting it. The exact sort of changes I’ve battled at radios stations I’ve been involved with over my lifetime, nurturing and building a community (long haul and hard) vs ratings and tried and tested lame solutions (commercial radio default setting) – battles I’ve always been on the losing side of too.

So once again Auckland/NZ is without a electronic music show that touches on anything outside of the commercial and mainstream end of the spectrum, sure there is GeorgeFM and the less said about that stations decent into the same pit of mediocre that Hauraki is now mining the better.

For the curious the shows and extras are all up on soundcloud.

As a listener and as a fan of electronic music I’m sad. Monday’s won’t be the same anymore.

Thanks David, Greg and Nick you guys rock!
