Happy New Year!

From myself and I’m sure all the BMP team – happy new year!
Last year ended on a sad musical note for me with the death of one of my favourite Jazz musicians, Freddie Hubbard. Freddie should be beloved to all house fans for providing the sample on Pepe Bradock’s ‘Deep Burnt’ – surely one of the all time classic deep house records. This sample comes from the song ‘Little Sunflower’ on Freddie’s 1979 album ‘love connection’ – whenever I find a second hand record store I always check out the Jazz section for this record. No luck so far. A different track of the same name appears on his 1966 album ‘Backlash’ which I am lucky enough to have in my collection(thanks Pip!). I highly recommend it, or any of his mid 60′s work for that matter – his album ‘Blue Spirits’ on Blue Note around this time is also great.
Here’s some fantastic footage of a young Freddie Hubbard with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers – his solo starts about a minute in. Enjoy, and rest in peace Freddie.
This year will be an interesting one for the ‘finger and I am very excited about what we have in the works for the site this year. (Just kidding, I have no idea what is in the works. Probably more of the same shit). I dropped the ball a little towards the end of last year with posting – in my defence I was in the process of moving to another country and music had to take a back seat for awhile. I am now established, and have a lovely new pair of headphones so I’m enjoying music more than ever. Hopefully I will manage more posts in the coming months.
This year I’m thinking about investigating the mp3 djing route (something I’ve been considering for quite some time) – I hate cds, but vinyl is impractical for me while I am based overseas and is increasingly expensive, so now may finally be the time to make the jump. Musically I’m not sure where my tastes are headed this year but I was very bored at a minimal club over new years, so probably still headed away from there. Deep house, dubstep, and disco are probably where my current tastes are at – it will be interesting to see what the year brings in these genres, but it would be foolishness to write off the likes of perlon, playhouse, kompakt and ‘minimal’ in general, let’s see what happens this year!
