Just a quick post – I’ve been meaning for ages to post up some new favourites – but every day the list of favourites gets longer and the chances of me actually putting together a coherent post gets slimmer. To reduce the slide somewhat I decided to use juno’s chart feature to put together a list of my favourite things from the last month or so..

Our Lips are Sealed” is a song written by Go-Go’s guitarist Jane Wiedlin and Specials and Fun Boy Three singer Terry Hall. It was first recorded by The Go-Go’s as the opening track on their 1981 album Beauty and the Beat (see 1981 in music) and served as their debut American single. In 2000 Rolling Stone named it one of the 100 Greatest Pop Songs of all time.

I always thought it a Fun Boy Three song and for my own piece of mind will continue to… no matter, its one of them great pop songs that ends itself to others take on it.. well until the bloody duff girls get their hands on it *shakes fist*.

I happened upon the Fuxa version this week thanks to a friends facebook status thingy and think it a wonderful take on the song… which only means we have to listen to them all, possibly multiple times – well not the Duff one… no need for that *shakes fist*

I don’t know why or how I came across this track and am sure I watched/listened to it last year and thought it lame…

Perhaps it was the whiskey sours… the sore tummy, the pounding headache but this song saved my freaking life on Saturday – perhaps a life not worth saving.

Whatever, I can’t stop watching listening to it now

Greg Wilson came to town so Mick, the Ninja and I donned long pants and headed off into town for a night of excess… It was fab.

He didn’t play voodoo ray much to my sadness

Move D is a man who should need little introduction to the BMP. Great singles released on Workshop, Uzuri, Running Back, the classic ‘Songs from The Beehive’ with Benjamin Brunn on Smallville, and (bound to impress some of the more aged BMPers), several releases on mid 90s warp records. So it goes without saying that I’m looking forward to his gig here in Tokyo in a few weeks. I thought I might focus on the support lineup all of who are also doing good things.

DJ Nobu seems to organise and play lots of the big techno parties around Tokyo, I first saw him smashing things after Scuba last year.. He doesn’t have too much production work to his name, but you can find his remix of Skin QER on mule musiq.. Deep rolling heaviness..

Gonno is another Japanese dj and producer I’ve been enjoying a lot – he has a little bit of production under his belt, notably a release on the excellent ‘International Feel’ records;

Lastly we have Stereociti who recently had an album release ‘Kawasaki’ on Mojuba records. If you know Mojuba you won’t be surprised that deep deep dubby house is the focus here – while I haven’t checked out the whole album, the samples and tracks on youtube sound great;

“In the UK and Europe in the late-60s a mysterious multi-talented musician known as Jesse Harper was hovering on the verge of stardom with his unique ‘jug-a-jug’ wailing guitar style when he gave it all away for saffron robes.

Harper’s date with rock ‘n roll fame was to be colourful but short-lived and recalled only in urban legends in latter years, once he disappeared from public life. On the verge of being signed to Atlantic Records in the US and having turned down a record deal with EMI to pursue life as a high-ranking Krishna monk, he virtually disappeared for over 30-years.

In his absence however, the guitar style he originated lived on in the backing tracks of many of New Zealand’s popular hit songs of the 60s, through the radio programmes he recorded with Bob Gillet’s New Zealand Radio Orchestra and The Brew and the highly influential album of original songs he recorded in London in 1969.

Most of those unique compositions were re-recorded by Human Instinct within a year of the original sessions, helping propel them to cult status in the world of underground music. Tapes of Harper’s recording session found their way back to New Zealand and into the hands of his contemporaries including Harvey Mann and unauthourised copies of an album released by Kissing Spell sold widely to contemporary rock enthusiasts for several decades”

His long ‘lost’ album was recently released on hip US label Drag City, home to Bonnie Prince Billie amongst other notable types.

I had the pleasure of sitting in the sun on a massive bean bag stoke ale in hand to witness him live on Saturday… he started off playing indian styles solo and after an hour, I am guessing, he slowly moved to a more rock format finishing with a three piece and showing just why he is revered by those whom know and remember him as Jesse Harper.

It was very pleasant and well cool… the wind ruined John Bakers DJ set as turntables records and wind don’t mix… but the day was saved by the mentalists known as the Cosbys who haven’t played for a good few years… they were so fun I couldn’t stop laugnhing, clapping and smiling.

For the lovers out there here is this adaption of an old (1928) Blind Willie Johnson song which whilst well cool Davy Graham makes it his own – a sad reflective and yet uplifting song of love lost.

There’s dozens if versions of this on youtub but they are nothing compared to this one. Perversely first entered my musical world via a Dubstep mix by the one like Appleblim… just wait for the drop.

We’ve been discussing 4AD amongst ourselves a bit this week… and I had intended to post a Bauhaus track but for fear of a mocking (we’re divided on their merit) I thought best takea more diplomatic approach and post a Bauhaus offshoot project (not on 4AD) from one of the members.
