Coronation Street Has Ended

As a youth one of the very first local bands I fell for was a band that had formed in my town, (it was a city then), and the singer had gone to my high school for a period too. They were super cool thanks primarily to their ultra cool lead singer… his fashion sense and swagger were everything I thought was cool… I wanted to emulate both but never did as I was a gormless fool.

They were the first band I ever tried to see in a pub and also the first time I was denied entry for being under age, bloody city pubs *shakes fist*. Being 15 or 16 at the time I was only four  years too young, could get served in the pubs outside town easily (simpler times) but in the city never…

Anyways the band went on to be one of the countries biggest and most successful bands on the back of a catalogue of pretty mundane songs, I’d say – though one can’t dispute the ability of them to write catchy hook laden songs destined to be sing along anthems. They were/are huge!

As I further explored music and built my young mans snobbery of perceived taste I grew to dislike the band and all they stood for, I have no idea what that means now – success? Through most of my adult years I cared little for the band nor their music except for two songs, the classic and deservedly so Victoria and the song I am picking for this week Poland. I am pleased to say I never disowned my admiration of Poland over the years, just subdued it.

Jordan Luck the singer of the band, The (Dance) Exponents and the person I so admired as a youngster passed from that status. That is until recent times when I’ve been fortunate to have had some contact with him and the various things he gets involved with and he’s a really bloody good bloke… I say this as if I am trying to validate a young mans fandom, which I don’t need to do a and he most certainly can do without.

Tonight the band are to be awarded the NZ Herald Legacy Award at the Vodafone NZ Music Awards, I’ll be there shaking my fist and hiding under tables as usual (even worn long pants, much to my internal horror).

So tonight Matthew, my pick for a bloody top song is Poland, shared here in live form though, for the clickers, I suggest you get over to spotify (or apple music if you’re the one person on the planet whom subscribed) and check out Poland (the original version not remastered/normal one.
