Laneway and Splore City Highlights

My highlights from the two festivals below.

I didn’t get to go to a festival in the refurbished Aotea Square – Auckland Laneway, while having some kiwi bands who would have been good to see, didn’t have Bear in Heaven or Les Savy Fav and i was hanging out to see them both so I crossed the ditch to stay and go to the festival with my brother.
It was super cool. Split over 4 stages at an Arts University Campus in Central-West Sydney. The bands who stood out were the two …

radio

I went and saw the Fela film (well technically a recording of a stage play but… ) and have afro breath as a result and you’d think a nice 18 minute opus to the man this week would be high on my agenda and I admit it was until I happened upon this delightful blog (http://puttingoutfire.posterous.com/) and spied this gem…
Nothing to do with afro beat, Fela Kuti or movies… but by god its grand

somebody has to get burnt

Whilst I adore Children’s Hour normally I’d post any song but this – as imo its their ‘hit’ so normally Id opt for something less known.. but having seen the band yesterday at Laneways in Auckland I couldn’t resist Looking For The Sun for they played a blinding version of this – the rest of the set was patchy at best… and bloody cool!
Post punk at its finest. Get the EP (mick did) it so rocks!

2010 in review: Mick

I’ve been meaning to post up some favourite releases of last year for a while now.
Favourite album:
Mount Kimbie – Crooks and Lovers
BMP favourite and the best post dubstep related release for me last year, although the Four Tet album ‘There is Love in You’ was also a firm favourite. These two kids from London have nailed this album. I really like the way the LP slowly builds up to songs like ‘Before i Move’ and ‘Blind Night Errand’ and dissolves away again into shorter more fragmented pieces.

Favourite compilation:
Mark E – …

I do love my ma and pa, not the way I love you

I’ve been hammering this song for the past couple of weeks, discovered whilst I researched what bands I wanted to see at the Big Day Out which has just gone… Must admit I’m totally hooked on this infectious little number, big time.
On the day (BDO) I went and watched said band… stnading in the rain surrounded mainly by silly dancing hippies… which mad me angry (why must they prance around ALWAYS where you are standing – out of the way)…  anyway the band were ppants… the song good… I got …

finally I can see you cystal clear

It was a long hard week of nothingness last week, being the fist week back at work post summer break was quite sobering to say the least…
Thankfully I had this song on the pod which not only put a bounce in me step on my daily commute but it cheered me up no end putting me in a good frame of mnd for the day ahead.
In short, it’s fab!

you’re better off dead

Many years ago I worked for a record company and this was the Chrsitmas card we sent out on video to all our suppliers one year.
It perplexed a few of the house music labels I dealt with…
Merry Christmas and all that jazz
