I picked this for the simple fact (excuse the pun) that its different – and we like different.
Flying Saucer Attack FACT mix, shines a light on a handful of the bands that have influenced him over the years, from 60s group Left Banke to American Music Club; German rockers Ramses to former Fairport Convention member Sandy Denny. For FSA fans it’s an invaluable insight into the project’s musical make-up; for newcomers, it’s simply one hell of a trip.

This weeks mix is just a solid set recording at Club Bahrein, Buenos Aires from German dude Tocadisco, who I had all but forgotten about… its not life changing nor break down ya neighbours door to go visit and pat their miniature horse that they keep in their lounge stuff… but its a good listen and will have you nodding your head and thinking about what that the horse next door is up to – is it eating the flowers you sent over yesterday…
Is it?

When confronted by the words: an explosive cocktail of swung house percussion, blocky melodies and body-battering sub-bass… I’m not sure what one is to do – laugh, weep or simply press play and hope for good things?
When confronted by the setting yourself the task of blogging a song and mix each and every week… I’m not sure what one is to do – get on and do the task, procrastinate or pretend the internets not been invented yet and thus the entire task is the stuff of sc fi madness and …

BN1 put me onto this mix, I’d missed it, its a solid as mix… but one thing makes it my pick for the week edging out the Carl Craig mix that possibly deserves the title more.
At around 38 minutes in the grimy textures give way to an old classic… a kiwi classic… a non dance classic… that of The Chills and their song Pink Frost. There is no context nor rational reason for the inclusion of the song in the mix… it sits out like a sore thumb, for this reason …

This week’s mix is just far too easy… too easy to find, too easy to love and too easy to hit the replay button on.
Still no one said finding music was meant to be hard….
“House music’s greatest hit-makers?
Quite possibly. Since the end of the 1980s, Kenny Dope and Louie Vega – given the Masters at Work name, so the story goes, by Todd Terry – have been releasing house and garage anthems with unbelievable regularity. There’s ‘The Ha Dance’ – the track that gave ballroom its trademark Ha crash. There’s ‘Work’, one …

I’ve been in DJ mix overload this week and its been glorious, in between some work related listening that bored and depressed the pants off me I took shelter in a variety of sounds selected, blended, mashed and mixed by some discerning souls covering disco, house, techno, minimal, experimental, dubstep, grime and just mental.
This week my pick wasn’t the most enjoyable or best mix I endured rather its one I dug because it was interesting.
Taken from the Moscow festival Outline’s soundcloud page (which hosts a bunch of you should grab me mixes) the …

I  love me a musical voyage and this week we have one from one of those rare talents… and probable loon – a music fan, DJ and great producer, Herbert.
“Producer, DJ, composer, film-maker and big band leader Matthew Herbert delivers a brilliant Essential Mix, mixed live in front of his pet tortoise. The tortoise was unmoved.”

Tim Sweeney’s BiS has been on form lately with heaps of decent mixes from the likes of Shit Robot, Horse Meat Disco, Tiger and Woods, Joakim this weeks show was James Murphy and it’s grand! Next week, Four Tet.
I know there’s a lot of dislike towards the interviews Sweeney does or his voice but I really enjoy listening to them when I’m walking. It’s super cool hearing these interviews when I’m interested in the producer and what they’re up to at the moment.

Mixes I’m digging

Nothing special today, just a few mixes I’ve picked up over the past few weeks.

Kicking off in house territories, little white earbuds has an interesting interview and mix from Tin Man. I’d heard a little of Tin Man’s stuff, being aware of him from the start of Tama Sumo’s Panorama Bar Cd from a few years back. He has an interesting production style, and this is an enjoyable wee mix. Check it out.
