Perhaps its the new year, perhaps its my age and general fuck it I can’t be arsed attitude or perhaps it is the gremlins in the soundcloud bunkers but fucked if I can find the mixes on that platform as I did last year – I’m blaming the code cause why blame yourself when there are virtual objects in play… so my discovery of mixes so far this year has been less than satisfactory – especially given my new year back to work blues. All of this isn’t helped by the …

With days to go til work finishes for the year,
Until santa comes to spread his christmas cheer,
Until its time to go,
And wish there was snow,
Fuck you and happy new year!

Yellowman (aka Winston Foster) was the deejaying sensation of the early eighties. With his inventive and amusing lyrics he achieved the status of superstar. The fact that he was an albino (an outcast in Jamaica) made his early years more difficult than anyone outside of Jamaica can possibly imagine. He endlessly boasted about how sexy, attractive and appealing he was to the opposite …

One of my personal musical heroes passed away this week – its been a year of losing too many musical gods… he wasn’t a musician, pop star or shredder of instruments… he was a humble DJ a spinner of tunes and his way of playing records and his taste defines so much of what makes DJ culture something to cherish…
Mancuso was always the most complex and anomalous of dance music’s early-70s pioneers. He defined the latter-day notion of a DJ not as someone who played records, but as someone who …

Was listening to some old mixes today and the idea of some of the places that i enjoyed music the most over my life struck me.
They mostly aren’t the nightclubs and venues for me.
Sitting in Geezer Guy’s lounge being schooled on Dnb, dub and weird stuff. Such a great place to just soak it in listening to one of my fave djs with Stinky Jim and Mark Burgess chipping in. This is where i first heard Super Discount and Rhythm & Sound.
Friday Nights at Inmusic, with the ever changing cast …

Regular reader of my blatherings might have seen me mention International Feel before, which has quietly developed into one of my favourite labels. Starting last year they’ve released a run of albums on single vinyl, and so far all have been great, beginning with Australia’s (?) Len Leise, continuing with CFCF’s “on holiday” which I recommended to ninja for his holiday, and now this record from Wolf Muller and Cass, which is a slow moving ambient balm to the various vexations of the modern world, good for summer afternoons, late …

The humidity is periodically kicking in, and in between work, study and bleakness I’m managing to fit in some summer drinking. Obviously reggae is first choice forever for this kind of atmosphere but I’m also partial to some more horizontally inclined jazz and funk.
For your consideration here is Italian composer Piero Umiliani with his work on a (presumably shlocky) film called “Il Corpo”. Beautiful “warm” sounding stuff. Umiliani is most known for writing muppet show staple “Mah na mah na”, and if you like the sounds of “Il Corpo” it …

A local DJ who continuously tagged people in links to his mixes on Facebook has been found savagely beaten to death.
Robert Daktari, a.k.a. Bob Daktari, was found by a member of the public in a ditch approximately five miles north of his home town Glen Eden, Aotearoa.
According to the Auckland Police, Mr. Daktari had been beaten to death with a blunt object and was found completely naked with a number of names and the words “how do you like it?” etched into his skin.
“It was a really grizzly scene, one of the …
