I’ve been slowly working back up to my 6 minute/km running pace after falling off and doing nothing since October. Getting out in this weather to listen to music while I push myself to run a mapped chode at an average running pace is good for the soul and the health.

Tonight I listened to this Courtesy mix and it was perfect. It started getting into Hardcore as I finished so that will be the start of my next excursion.

More hitters from on form labels Livity Sound and Whities again in 2018. Rekids also released a heap of bangers.
Some highlights from some records I picked up in this playlist:

Favourite YouTube discovery of the year is David Portnoy’s daily Pizza Reviews around NYC and the East Coast. One bite, everybody knows the rules.

These reviews were previously uploaded on the Barstool Sports account. Bill Burrs included:

Stand Up highlight was probably Bert Kreischer Secret Time – tempted to go see him when he comes to Auckland in June.

Favourite podcast is still Your …

Here’s a playlist of some of my favourite record pickups from last year.
Great year for the label Whities.
I was underwhelmed with the Superpitcher LP, released as 24 tracks over the 12 months with 1 12″ per month. The only stand out for me was the track Brothers.
Expect to hear some of these out the back of mine this Summer!

Following on from Bob’s post about the Margins label release a few months back, it really is amazing seeing how enthusiastic under 25’s from all over the country are about House and Techno. It’s so refreshing seeing life being injected into the New Zealand scene.
Really stoked for all these Kiwi Producers releasing on international labels and getting pressed to vinyl just proves their achievements in a pretty short space of time. Looking forward to watching them all get even better over the next few years.
Sweet little feature on those pushing …

Sometimes music you already own gets re-pressed to vinyl and it blows because it’s nice knowing you’re one of how ever many people to own a great record. Waiting for these represses are the arse hats who buy up and resell on discogs for inflated prices – last weeks Pepe Bradock repress of Burning as an example.
Then stuff gets re-pressed that you really, really want but don’t own and it’s amazing!
The LP Torus by Vril recently got a repress – I was happy!
This track is so ace

I’ve been building the playlist of all playlists for work to save me from having to put up with commercial radio 9 hours a day. I have to be pretty lenient in what gets played with a work mate who would sooner listen to Flava than anything else, which rules out podcasts while he’s here.
It’s been incredible some tracks that I’ve rediscovered that just get no airtime anywhere after just a few years. The playlist is sitting at 14 hours which is kind of perfect because nothing gets played twice …

Embedded below is a playlist of 10 tracks purchased this year. The Workshop 21 ep made it twice which makes it a firm favourite and probably my favoruite release of the year.

I’ll wrap this post up with some mixes I returned to more than a couple of times:

Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3/Spectrum) is mastering the new Ghost Wave album “Radio Norfolk” which is due out later this year. I hope it turns out well for them because they’re probably my favourite Auckland band.

The drummer Eamonn has been releasing electronic music as part of a project Team Cat Food (check out Ponderosa below). Seeing how broad their taste is reminds me of the Tony Wilson quote about the reason there were so many good Manchester bands was because Manchester kids had the best record collections, which I assume these …

Vince Staples

At this point Summertime ’06 has got to be contender for rap album of the year.
Firstly check his excellent Over/Under for Pitchfork.

And this years Norf Norf off his Summertime ’06 LP

Last years Blue Suede is also great

He talks a bit about making pivotal music moments with singles and mixtapes at the 13:19 minute mark in this interview and how kids these days don’t buy music. Funny dude.

Shout out to our buddy Justin Nabbs who recently posted up this mix on his Soundcloud – There’s lots of good stuff in here, including 40 Thieves Ft Qzen ‘Don’t Turn it Off’, Lucky Paul ‘Thought We Were Alone (Money vs Gold Remix)’, Simon Baker ‘Plastik’ & the very excellent John Talabot ‘Leave Me’, whch was recently included on the Permanent Vacation mix ‘If This Is House I Want My Money Back’.
