Hot

- Four Months of not working over Summer: ’nuff said.

- The Stax Records Documentary: without a doubt the highlight of this years Auckland Film Fesitval…I’ve never walked out of a movie theatre with a massive smile, feeling so damn good about everything, and with a strong desire to immediately break into all the local music stores to try and collect all the outstanding music that I had just sampled. Props to the Ninja for finding this on DVD.

- The Keith Haring Story – a close 2nd at the Film Festival, telling the story of a legendary artist in New York, in a time when the city was a lot more dangerous, interesting and inspirational. His work continues to be unlike anyone elses…

- Roy Ayers, Stevie Wonder: Propah soul. Crazy vibes, pianos and mumu’s.

- Kraftwerk: Groundbreaking and timeless electronic music that continues to sound as relevant as ever. Held, for once, in a decent venue with a soundsystem that did the music justice. Bowel-moving bass and crisp highs, complimentary visuals and four guys standing behind keyboards and computers – plus actual robots! The only thing that let this gig down was the power-hungry security who were on your back if you even looked at switching your camera on.

- Luciano in Sydney: The second BMP road trip (unfortunately sans 2 BMP members) saw us cruising around the Sydney harbour on a pimped-out boat with Luciano seamlessly weave together stripped down percussion-led grooves with classic techno and festive horn-blasting tracks. It was great to finally hear KenLou’s “Bangin’” on a big system, 10 years after it was originally released, and it didn’t disappoint. And if you needed a break from the crazy Chilean’s style, the top deck of the boat was host to Greg Wilson, classic disco-styles and lotsa sunshine.

- Das Ist Minimal: One of the few times I truly enjoyed DJ’ing this year… the fact that Mick & Benny had tirelessly spent some time before the gig tweaking the system and warming it up nicely payed off for myself and fellow DJ’s Nabbs and Shane54. We were all given free range to play what we wanted, and the end-of-night back-to-back session with my fellow BMPers was awesome.

- BMP Towers: Minimal in every way. We <3 Beanbags.

- The return of Grace Jones. Freakalicious, even after all these years.

- Discovering who ya real mates are.

Not:

- Losing BMP members (and a PGF) to the innevitable overseas lure . Lucky bastards. We miss you.

- The continued downward spiral of the NZ club scene. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, we carry on getting the same string of shtty, were-never-any-good-to-begin-with DJ’s, or acts that were relavent at one time, but by the time they reach our shores it’s all a bit too late.

- George FM. Forward thinking radio programming…from 5 years ago.

- More stupid sub-genre names. What the fuck is “Space Disco”? And I still despise “Tech-House” as well. Do you really need to mount yourself on a ridiculous mid-way fencepost because you can’t decide if you want to House or Techno? Is there some problem with being both? Did I miss a meeting?

- Doors with fucked locks.

- Still being in NZ.

- Sickness.

Questionable:

- The Ninja’s viewing choices. Hugh Jackman worshipping a hairy tree was never going to inspire peaceful dreams, you bastard.

- 2008 in general.

Following on from Websta’s & Benny’s posts about albums that made an impact, I would like to proudly induct Tricky’s debut, “Maxinquaye”, into the Stink-Finger hall of fame.
Tricky threw his darkly warped yet disturbingly sexy collection of songs into the world in 1995, one year after I had escaped high school and moved on to studying audio engineering in an institution filled with tutors who believed that The Beatles would re-form and release new music any day now.

They instantly hated me after discovering that my love of “electronic house music”, and tried to convince me it was a passing fad and would never last since there were no real use for guitars in it.
In a young and foolish attempt to convince them I had no issues with guitars, I played them parts of Maxinquaye. Their disdain for me grew even deeper.

The opening track, Overcome, provokes that exact feeling – stealing Tricky’s lines from his time with Massive Attack and placing them over plodding drums and eerie drawn out atmospheres. From that point on, the rhythms slowly unravel and become more and more disjointed as each track passes, and while Martina Topley’s delivery of Tricky’s writings slightly soften the intense blow, the actual lyrical content is enough to mix an uncomfortable unease with a dark sub-conscious familiarity.

Tricky’s own dry raspy vocals finally take a front seat on Hell Is Round The Corner, and the appropriate chant of “my brain thinks bomb like” catapults you straight into his psyche.

The album has been put together in such a way that drags you along, possibly against your own better judgement, and pulls you through dirty corridors of demons with unstable strobe-like sonic blasts of thoughts you know should be locked out, but will seep through whatever crevice necessary to get inside. Tricky plants himself in your head, and provides a channeling voice to all the ideas you’ve tried to lock away for so long.

If you manage to survive through Abbaon Fat Track (“I’ll fuck you in the ass/just for a laugh/then with quick speed/I’ll make your nose bleed”), you get thrown into the whiplash of Brand New, You’re Retro before hitting a speedbump of cocked-guns and disorientating noises on Strugglin’ (“Label me insane/I’m more normal than most”).

13 years & several Tricky albums later, Maxinqaye remains one of the most unnerving and outstanding albums I own, with his side Nearly God side project being the only one that could possibly be labelled as darker than this.

Mick: I’m seeing Ewan Pearson this weekend, for free!
thinking Redshape would be way too banging at Berghain for my taste.
Drake: Man – his shit is the hotness, perfect location for it….
And is less banging than Eqan Person can get! heh
Think Pearson will be too epic for panormaa, it suits more subdued grooves of a berlin nature methinks to be truely hot, tho it’s an ace space for anything.
think berghain room on a kompakt night
Mick: Pearson plays to suit the venue. He’ll mack it.

Websta: your love fer pearson weirds me out.

Mick: Either of you seen him play?

Drake: Yeah, he’s ok… if on the cheese side of dance for my tastes. is an ok producer now and then too… tho again, he’s always got that jack lu cont of 2007/08 vibe about him. Talented sure. but I’ve never heard a great mix from him, lots of nice songs, but up against the top djs he’s pretty safe….

How many times you seen him?I’ve heard a couple of dozen sets… none which light up much.
Don’t have to see someone to have an opinion….You seen redshape play at berghain?

The Ninja: *comments banned*

Mick: True. I’m just basing my opinion on what i’ve heard be played at Berghain and what i’ve heard of Redshapes production. Only really loved Ultra.
Totally agree on Pearsons production over the last few years. Too stringy and can see why people would dismiss him. But can honestly say that as a live dj, he’s the man.

Websta: meh, redshape and pearson are both rubbish, but at least pearson don’t wear a spack gladiator mask……

Benny: I still think some people would challenge that choice of words wayde.
Ewan Pearson is awesome for his remix of goldfrapp train if nothing else. More people need to bite ‘i feel love’

Drake: There is no other artist on earth that suits Berghain more…
And Wayde, I really pity you if you for not having taste in quality music. Must truly suck to know that you don’t chose good lasting music and that everything you like turns out to be shite after a while.

Websta: examples? i heard a truckload of redshape stuff didn’t even like the `hit’. mind you i got over detroit in the 90′s….

Drake: Weren’t you the one who got Redsahpe vinyl? You have called moodyman rubbish, even tho you used to like it. You have called countless others rubbish, even though you used to like them….

It’s all very confusing for people. I guess it’s because if people like something well enough to endorse it, it’s not very often they will turn around and call the same thing rubbish a while later. They might grow out of it, but to have so little faith in your own taste is very strange.

One can’t help but wonder when RPR will become ‘rubbish’ for you? (probably in 3 months time when their residency at Fabric gets going properly away from ricardo).

I already know they won’t last, in fact, I think everyone here knows that. They play very safe, now music that is not very musical, and won’t be remembered beyond a few eastern bloc clubbers and a couple of ex-fabric folk. Every berlin DJ can spin like they do, for as long, with the same music. If they were Hans, Henrik and Jens then they wouldn’t even be on anyone’s radar. Doesn’t mean that they are shite. And I won’t say they are shit in 2 years time, but I’ll bet money you will call them shite in 2 years time. But there are plenty of way hotter talents out there (Tanzman, Serafin, Quarion, Reboot, Johnny D) who are pushing the tech-house roll style with a lot more flare, musicality, and longevity.

Considering Redshape outsells most other artists around at present, and gets charted by a fuckload of people, his sound is fairly relevant today I’d say…

Websta: Yes i have 1 12″, simon left it for you at my house… so technically its yoursand yes thats a point well missed Matt.

I do love moodymann rpr etc etc but 99% of artists at some point lose the focus, drive, edge that they initially had. I don’t stop liking the old stuff but i do not blindly keep loving them if they start to release rubbish. Example : I like the rolling stones. When? 60′s or the 2008 version? are those 2 versions of the stones the same?

If Rpr start to release crap records i shall stop caring and move on to whatever it is that gets me excited. I have no favourites and no need to cling to dead heroes.

Why do you?
