Uk garage in the free jazz bean bag

So I headed up to BMP towers this weekend to record my Stinkfinger podcast which is now probably overdue. I was somewhat hesitant having let loose a large quantity of beanbag beans over Lelo’s record collection on my previous visit. This time I managed to spill (white!) wine over Websta’s uk garage collection and a small patch of carpet. To conquer my awkwardness I decided to down a few beers but unlike most occasions this didn’t seem to help my mixing or even my perceptions of my …

Happy birthday

A quick post to say happy birthday to my sister Pip!
I am lucky enough to have a sister who loves good and interesting music. To celebrate here is Cecil Taylor!

Tomorrow I’m at supperclub again for the second week in a row, more house, techno and dubstep to warm up the evening.

Frustration and addiction

These last 6 months have been frustrating as fuck for me! Saving, traveling, being broke, and having my records and turntables all packed away have combined to make it an extremely disjointed year in terms of record purchases.
This would be easier to bear if it wasn’t so easy to monitor all the great and interesting music that is still coming out. Subsequently I am still stashing records into a wishlist in the vain hopes that I can go back at some point in the future and purchase some …

A formative mix

While Websta’s update took us all back to the halcyon days of the late 80s my influential LP is somewhat less memory taxing, emerging in 2002. Not only that, it isn’t even an album, nope, it turns out an influential record for me is infact just another mix cd.
I’m not sure what you were up to in 2002 but for me it was an unsettled time both musically and in general. If you cast your mind back you will no doubt recall the ‘funky’ house that seemed to …

It isn’t house but it is a thing.

There are some things on in Auckland this weekend.
Tomorrow night (friday 15) I venture into the rain to play at the supperclub on Beresford square. I like supper – despite having a dodgy rep (thanks mainly to the antics of late morning up all night mentalist partygoers) it is generally a relaxed place where you can pretty much play whatever music you like. On an early evening in summer there are few better places in Auckland to be. On a night like tomorrow promises to be I …

Moritz Von Oswald Trio – Live at Daikanyama Unit 11/7/08

I feel like stinkfinger is sitting comfortably between the ramblings of a group of friends and a slightly more professional music blog – so I don’t have any problem with diverting immediately from the topic at hand and dialling back the night a few hours.
We start the night off at a resturant with some excellent dinner – along with my friends Daniel and Ayako I eat various sashimi, some fantastic beef tataki, something delicious and rubbery that I hope was octopus, a large piece of cooked tuna, crumbed and fried …

A few words on my trip to Womb

So Saturday rolled around and it was my first chance to go out clubbing in Tokyo.
As I mentioned before Johnny D and Guido Schneider were to play, and I was pretty excited about the night. Daniel and I warmed up with some (actually pretty decent) burgers and wandered into the flashing lights and general chaos of Shibuya. Like many parts of Tokyo I was surprised how that by wandering just a few blocks back from the main areas that are teeming with people you can find very quiet …

Sunday Adventure Club

Just to keep things poppin along here is what I wrote about last Sunday with a few amendments.
We missed Cassy Got there in time for last hour of luciano in the sun – lots of ‘his’ set records, freaks come out, god made me funky, the thrill me thing he played at Fabric (which I missed) again. Maybe 1000 people getting into it. Wink played next but about 20 min in massive rain came down and everyone hid under umbrellas apart from mentallists up the front. …
