Music I like!

Lazy youtubery post sorry!
Some musical enthusiasms of recent times:
This summer has been the summer of Dam Funk!

Untold brings yet another piece of awesome:

Beautiful work as usual from wax (who apparently has now pretty much been revealed to be shed):

Listening to James Blake really loud is a necessary pleasure but I think it made me hurt my neck:

Joy Orbison, best name twisting since Jichael Mackson, and some great music too!:

Lil Silva – ‘Different’ – its heavy!:

Michel Cleis – ‘Dark Glasses’ – lots of drums happening:

I’m pretty much consistently excited about music …

Ah summer. Beer, Cricket, and The Don

Don Drummond that is.

Picked up some new records at the weekend, and it is so hot that reggae can be the only serious consideration right now. Ska more precisely was the order of the day with a Don Drummond record I found getting some serious thrashing from me. In the summer I could (do) listen to this kind of thing all day long. If you don’t know much about this brilliant, but somewhat tragic figure in Jamaica’s long musical history, some youtube and linkery follow below.

Benny! Benny! Benny! Bennyyy!

I generally can’t stand Elton John but I am also naturally a big fan of this song.
Benny And The Jets (Mike Simonetti’s dub version)
Found on the Italians Do It Better blog
Been a bit slack on the posting here – I’ve been trying to learn Japanese, and it is hard work. I have sorted out temporary use of a turntable for my apartment which could be dangerous! Last vinyl purchases were some Jus-Ed, the mental new Ame innervisions, and a promo copy I found of Simon Flower’s …

The Russian Ninja

Aka Russian Terminator (1989, Denmark)

I have seen this film and it is every bit as bad as it looks, but worth a post I believe in honour of Ninja’s upcoming journey.

Pop’n'Tuck: Stink-Finger Podcast #04

A lot can change in 2 years!  At the start of 2007, I was living in an old house near a vaguely dodgy part of Auckland’s CBD.  The BMP was an as yet unacquainted and unincorporated group of disparate figures who had not yet discovered a mutual enjoyment for the triplicate vices of Beer, MUSIC, and Pizza.  My friend Mike, (aka Mick ‘the kid’) was living in Mt Albert near what I personally consider one of Auckland’s best cafes, so most weekends would see me grabbing a pile of records …

Happy New Year!

From myself and I’m sure all the BMP team – happy new year!
Last year ended on a sad musical note for me with the death of one of my favourite Jazz musicians, Freddie Hubbard.  Freddie should be beloved to all house fans for providing the sample on Pepe Bradock’s ‘Deep Burnt’ – surely one of the all time classic deep house records.  This sample comes from the song ‘Little Sunflower’ on Freddie’s 1979 album ‘love connection’ – whenever I find a second hand record store I always check out the …

Roy Ayers hot or not

All the Ak based BMP members were in attendance for Jazz/Funk legend Roy Ayers’ gig on saturday night.  I don’t know if the others have much to say about it.

Instead of a review here is a hot or not as I am at work and don’t have time.
Hot:
Nearly beating the ninja at ‘burnout 3: takedown’ despite his supposed superiority.
Lengthy and mostly good set from Mr Ayers and band, hitting on his most well known songs early on (We live in Brooklyn, everybody loves the sunshine, running away) and continuing on …

Uk garage in the free jazz bean bag

So I headed up to BMP towers this weekend to record my Stinkfinger podcast which is now probably overdue. I was somewhat hesitant having let loose a large quantity of beanbag beans over Lelo’s record collection on my previous visit. This time I managed to spill (white!) wine over Websta’s uk garage collection and a small patch of carpet. To conquer my awkwardness I decided to down a few beers but unlike most occasions this didn’t seem to help my mixing or even my perceptions of my …

Happy birthday

A quick post to say happy birthday to my sister Pip!
I am lucky enough to have a sister who loves good and interesting music. To celebrate here is Cecil Taylor!

Tomorrow I’m at supperclub again for the second week in a row, more house, techno and dubstep to warm up the evening.
