Some new music recently from Ninja Tune – a label that I’ve always loved and been into up and down over the years depending on my level of weed intake and/or interest in the kind of sample based trip hop I initially associated them with. For long stretches I haven’t paid much attention to them but they’re still going after 27 years so respect for that at least. This year however they seem to have some interesting releases lined up with the two I’m about to mention …

Finally out floating around on vinyl is Superpitcher’s rework of Joakim’s cover of Neil Young’s “on the beach”. For awhile in the mid 00s Superpitcher was one of my favourite producers and while I no longer check his stuff religiously I have a soft spot for this mix.

Here’s the original Neil Young which I’ve always enjoyed too.

Here’s something from last year, Villalobos having a lengthy reshake of Aussie experimentalist Oren Ambarchi on the latter’s tasty black truffle label. Submit yourself to its murky depths!

Been a bit quiet on the sounds of the summer here – but the flow of music just doesn’t stop. After quite a bit of back and forthing a stack of vinyl was ordered, assembled and gratefully received at casa del benny.
A highlight of the order is the (slightly) mysterious “Thoughtstream” – by Dices and AEM Rhythm Cascade. The first release on new Scottish label “12th Isle”, the contents are an eclectic mix of hazy ambient, warm synths, and some more beat focused work. Bit …

Regular reader of my blatherings might have seen me mention International Feel before, which has quietly developed into one of my favourite labels. Starting last year they’ve released a run of albums on single vinyl, and so far all have been great, beginning with Australia’s (?) Len Leise, continuing with CFCF’s “on holiday” which I recommended to ninja for his holiday, and now this record from Wolf Muller and Cass, which is a slow moving ambient balm to the various vexations of the modern world, good for summer afternoons, late …

The humidity is periodically kicking in, and in between work, study and bleakness I’m managing to fit in some summer drinking. Obviously reggae is first choice forever for this kind of atmosphere but I’m also partial to some more horizontally inclined jazz and funk.
For your consideration here is Italian composer Piero Umiliani with his work on a (presumably shlocky) film called “Il Corpo”. Beautiful “warm” sounding stuff. Umiliani is most known for writing muppet show staple “Mah na mah na”, and if you like the sounds of “Il Corpo” it …

Super busy and every time I think of doing something to put up here (new mix, new chart, new blather) I don’t have enough time, so I figure lets just roll out some individual tunes I like from time to time and see how we go.
Recently been digging Fast Moving Cars forthcoming on Blackest Ever Black. Digging the dubwise production and detached delivery, bonus video of Carla(?) going swimming presumably somewhere in Australia – there might be crocs in that water.

‘Fast Moving Cars’: the debut solo single from Carla dal …

So last year due to the combination of encroaching age, being busy with study and work, and general laziness, chilling out on the couch watching some tv became a prime source of entertainment for me. Luckily this coincided with ‘peak tv’ – the result of streaming services, cable and your traditional US channels all fighting it out for new content. The downside is there is a ridiculous amount of shows, an impossible amount to take in. The second season of True Detective was eminently skippable so that …

Well here we go with a lazy 20 of my favourite releases of 2015, all stacked up in Juno. Only rules were excluding albums, and no particular order.
A lot of people complain about end of year lists but I am the type of nerd who gets into lists, and you can find a whole bunch of new music this way and that can’t be bad. Get in there.

Boom bang bang!
It’s not just me being stupid, it’s also the sounds of Rabit’s ‘Communion’ – rattling into contention as one of my favourite records of the year. Coming through on Tri Angle – home to Haxan Cloak, FIS, SD Laika, Holy Other, and other proponents of electronic heaviness, it was always going to be one to check.
It’s a bit hard to describe his sound, so I’d recommend getting a little taste via the vid for ‘artemis’.

Rabit’s work takes some cues from the second wave of grime but …
