It was 1983, my school certificate year… I cbought my first ever import record from a store in Timaru where we lived, not a good record store like you’d find in a city… a shitty one that for some crazy reason had this one record.
It was a great listen and allowed me to finally hear so many artists I’d only read and dreamt about…  on it was this particular song

I have a thing (understatement) for the Eastern Front during the Second World War… a fascination, obsession and lifelong interest in the history of this huge conflict which sealed the fate for Hitler’s Germany.
My interest introduced me to Shostakovich and his  Seventh Symphony written while he endured the siege of Leningrad – officially claimed as a representation of the people of Leningrad’s brave resistance to the German invaders and an authentic piece of patriotic art at a time when morale needed boosting.

This weekend I didn’t trust my instincts and bought a one day pass …

Here’s a playlist of some of my favourite record pickups from last year.
Great year for the label Whities.
I was underwhelmed with the Superpitcher LP, released as 24 tracks over the 12 months with 1 12″ per month. The only stand out for me was the track Brothers.
Expect to hear some of these out the back of mine this Summer!
